Character Background: Jen & Artimes

Jen Lightfoot
You live in the village of Scharmbeck helping your mum and dad run the village bakery They pay you 6 shillings a week for your help. Like most Halflings you love food, but unlike most, who's idea of excitement is guessing what the pie filling is going to be for dessert, you have a desire for adventure and want to travel and see the world.

This all started when you discovered you had a talent for 'borrowing' things! Most people would call it stealing, but that's just silly, as you do intend to return the items  at some point, and besides you only borrow from those that won't really miss the items anyway.

The first item you borrowed was from a scholar that was passing through the village and staying in the White Feather Inn. You were in there one day looking for your friend Zarther, when you noticed the door to one of the rooms wasn't locked. So of course you decided you better go in and check everything was ok. Once you got inside you found his travel bag laying on the bed and an amazing map of Wissenland sticking out.

This map caught your eye as you have always wanted to travel, so you took it to help you when you start on your quest to explore the world.

Since then you have been perfecting your ability to open doors and locks and feel it is nearing the time for you leave the village and seek your fame and fortune.

Artimes
Natalie joined after the first few sessions and I never got round to doing a proper background for her other than she is a servant in the Manor House in the village of Scharmbeck and is friends with both Zarther and Jen.

Character Background: Tobias

You were born and raised in the village of Thalfang where you lived with you mother (Abbie), father (Voltz) and your younger sister (Katherina). Your father is the Captain of the Village Watch

You found life in the village pretty easy growing up. You and your sister would help out in the local farmers fields to earn a little money and upon reaching adulthood you joined the Village Watch. When your sister was 16 she got a job as a barmaid in the village inn.

One evening just over a month ago, a couple of strangers arrived in the village. You were off duty and sitting in the Inn with your friend Johann (also in the Village Watch). When the strangers walked into the bar, everyone stopped talking and turned to look. One, was a tall handsome man with an air of nobility about him. The other was a young beautiful woman who smelled very strongly of perfume and also looked of noble birth. They sat in the corner of the common room on their own and your sister was the one that walked over to take their order.

They seemed to spend a long time talking to her but when you quizzed your sister about them later that evening she said they were just father and daughter passing through and that they had booked a room at the Inn for that night.

The next morning you and your parents were called to the Inn. Upon arrival you were shown to the Inn room that the strangers had rented. Laying on the bed, dead, was your sister! Her body was horribly mutilated, her chest has been cut open and her heart had been removed and was missing! She also had some stab marks on her inner thighs, and there was blood all over the bed sheets. You and your father examined the room and the only clue you could find was a small gold bracelet with an ornate 'E' carved into it laying on the floor next to the bed.

There was no sign of the strangers and no one had seen them leave town. A search was made but turned up nothing.

After the funeral you vowed to yourself that you would find these strangers and make them pay. Using the skills you have learnt as part of the Village Watch, you decided to go freelance as a Bounty Hunter to improve you people finding skills and decided to head for the nearest town (Sonnefurt) and start looking for work. You said goodbye to your parents, packed your belongings and got on the next coach.

Upon your  arrival in Sonnefurt you headed for the Town Watch office to register your services. As luck would have it they had a job for you. They needed someone to travel to the village of Scharmbeck to pick up a prisoner and escort him back here for trial. The Watch Captain gave you a letter giving you free coach travel to the village, free pass back for you and the prisoner, and a letter for the Scharmbeck Village Watch Captain (Frank Larkin), explaining you are to transport the prisoner.

You board the coach early Bezahltag morning and arrive in Scharmbeck village that afternoon

Character Background: Zarther

You spent your youth living in the small village of Kophugel just outside Thalfang, with your father, mother and older sister. A few days after your 15th birthday a Carnival arrived and erected a large tent just outside the village boundaries. Like everyone else in the village, that evening you and your family went to the see the Carnival.

Strongmen performed feats of incredible prowess to the adoration of the crowd, whilst players in garish, grinning masks juggled balls, knives and flaming brands. As the crowd's numbers increased, a fool in bright jester's garb with an inflated pig's bladder on a stick leaped from one enthralled watcher to the next joking and cackling, poking and prodding.

It was only when the show reached its blasphemous climax, as the sun began to set, that the truth of the Carnival of Chaos was revealed in all its putrid, festering glory. For these were no mere wandering thespians and entertainers.

When the players performed their final act, known as the Dance of Death, the enchantments covering their true visages slowly slipped away revealing them to their blissfully ignorant audience, for they were cavorting, cyclopean daemons, with rotting flesh hanging from yellowing bones. What were originally considered intricately decorated masks and cleverly applied make-up was soon revealed as the player's true horribly mutated faces, covered in pustules and pox-ridden lesions.

As the villager's expressions turned from those of elation to abject terror at the sight of these horrific visions the slaughter began. Most of the folk who made up the cheering audience had already succumbed to the virulent diseases spread by these malevolent players. As you watched, the villager's bodies (your parents included) blistered, mutated and withered before your eyes.

Very few villagers survived the night, save for a few of the villages fairest maidens (including your sister).  They were rounded up by the insidious Carnival Master, accompanied by his cackling fool.

They were then chained together and the Carnival Master cut a finger from each of them exclaiming "You are all my wives now." They were then tied to the wagons and the Carnival of Chaos packed up and left, leaving the village deserted, its inhabitants and livestock killed by innumerable diseases and plague.

Somehow you managed to hide from the daemons that night and was the only survivor. The following morning a Witch Hunter arrived with a small band of followers including a priestess of Shallya. She took care of you and cured the plague from your body and helped you deal with the traumatic experience. Eventually you travelled to Scharmbeck to stay with your Grandfather Gideon. He was a Wizard and had known for some time that you were the only member of his bloodline to share the magic gift.

You have stayed with him since, learning the ways of wizardry until he passed away two years ago. He left his house and possessions (mainly a large collection of books) to you.

Studying his books you have gained the following information on the Carnival that changed your life:

The Carnival of Chaos is the sick joke of the Great Lord of Decay, the chaos god known as Nurgle. The players in the Carnival are his corrupt followers and worshippers. They are those who have sold their souls for a twisted form of immortality, through embracing death, destruction and decay, learning to love Nurgle's many and varied gifts.

You currently work part time in The White Feather Inn as a barmaid where you are paid 6 shillings a week. Your best friend in the village is a Halfling named Jen Lightfoot.

You spend your spare time pouring over ancient books for information on the Carnival of Chaos and planning to extract your revenge on the Carnival Master and hopefully find your lost sister.

Introduction

Welcome to the Blog for our Warhammer 2nd Edition RPG. We are a group of from Kent in England and meet every 1-4 weeks. Our group consists of:
Neal (me): I will be running all the sessions as the GM and updating our little Blog
Claire: She is playing Zarther Eisenberg an HumanApprentice Wizard
Dan: He will be playing a Human Bounty Hunter called Tobias Reech
Jason: Will be playing a Halfling Thief called Jen Lightfoot
Natalie: Playing a Human Servant called Artimes

Character Creation
I decided to let the characters choose their starting careers, rather than rolling randomly. Also our group started with only 3 players (Claire, Dan and Jason) and as the campaign was going to be a real challenge for a small group I decided to change the way the Characteristics we created as well. Rather than roll 2D10+20, each player was given 8 number to assign to their stats as they wished. The numbers were 40, 38, 37, 36, 35, 33, 30 & 28.

As you can see this had the effect of giving everyone a better than average character for the campaign as I thought they would need it, also as they are new to RPG's I wanted them all to have equal starting characters

Jen Lighfoot (Jason's Character) also had the following modifiers applied after he had assigned his numbers to reflect the fact that he is a Halfling. WS-10, BS+10, S-10, T-10, Ag+10, Fel+10.

Everyone also started with a set number of Wounds, 13 for the humans and 11 for the Halfling.Fate and Fortune Points were also set at 3 for Humans and 4 for the Halfling.
